STANAG 6001 (English Tests)

This is a web based information system developed for the Rakovski National Defense College (Bulgarian Ministry of Defense). It allows to perform online English language proficiency tests following the NATO’s standard - STANAG 6001.

The administrators of the system can review and maintain the list of questions and organize and schedule the exams. The participants can take the particular exam they are assigned to.

The system supports to test three different skills – reading, listening and writing. The evaluation of the reading and listening test is fully automated and the administrators/teachers should manually evaluate only the writing tests.

There are two types of automated tests for the reading and listening skills – Computer Assisted and Adaptive. With the Computer Assisted type of test the participants starts with first (lowest) level questions and the system gives him or her harder questions as the exam advances. The Adaptive algorithm starts with second (middle) level questions and would give harder or easier questions depending on the performance of the current participant.

The English language proficiency test is taken entirely online and the only requirement to use the system is to have a modern web browser and stable Internet connection.

In this project we had to deal with various challenges like exact measurement of the remaining time of each participant, smooth playing of audio files for the listening type of exams, implementing the rules or the complex adaptive algorithm, etc.

The system is built based on the Microsoft stack of technologies – ASP.NET, C# and SQL Server. Also, we used standard modern web technologies like AJAX, jQuery, HTML5/CSS3, etc. to develop the smooth user interface allowing to run a flawless test even by people without technical expertise.
